Parental Engagement: When Parents Become Co-Educators

At Light Academy, we believe that learning does not begin and end in the classroom. It continues at home, in the community, and through the relationships that surround every child. This belief has been at the heart of our LIFE Model, where parental engagement has been a key pillar in creating meaningful and holistic learning experiences.
Traditionally, parents visited schools only during scheduled meetings or when concerns arose. At Light Academy, we have reimagined that relationship by intentionally strengthening the parental engagement pillar and inviting parents to become active participants in their children's learning journey.
The Journey Begins: Creating Spaces for Parents
As part of strengthening the parental engagement pillar of the LIFE Model, we began intentionally creating spaces for parents to learn, reflect, and grow together. Through dedicated sessions on positive parenting, parents explored ways to support their children's development and build stronger connections with one another.
These engagements led to the formation of Parent Support Groups, where parents now meet regularly to share experiences, encourage one another, and exchange ideas on supporting their children's learning and wellbeing.
From Visitors to Co-Educators
Our initial goal was simple: to help parents become more involved in their children's education. We never imagined how far they would take it.
Today, parents have become co-educators in our school, walking into classrooms not as visitors, but as trusted partners in learning. They are now a regular and comforting presence in our school, actively participating in the teaching and learning process.
What Parents Do in the Classroom
On any given day, you will find parents in our classrooms:
Storytelling Sessions
Parents share stories from their cultures, personal experiences, and traditions, helping children connect classroom lessons to the world around them.
Singing and Play
Together with teachers and children, parents lead songs, games, and playful learning activities that make the classroom feel like home.
Creating Learning Materials
Parents work hand in hand with teachers to design play items and project-based learning materials using resources found in the community.
"Before these sessions, I thought teaching was the teacher's job and my role ended after taking my child to school. Now I know I can teach too. I tell stories, sing with the children, help make learning materials, and spend more time supporting my child at home. Seeing my child excited when I come into the classroom reminds me that my presence matters just as much as my words."
The Impact: A Transformed Learning Environment
The impact has been remarkable.
"The atmosphere in my classroom has changed completely. Learners, seeing their parents as active partners in their learning, have begun to appreciate education in a new light. Children are more excited to come to school because learning feels fun and familiar. Attendance has improved, learners participate more confidently during lessons."
"Learners have developed a deeper respect for their teachers since the authority of teachers is reinforced, not by distance, but by partnership," she added.
A Shared Responsibility
We believe that education is a shared responsibility. When parents become co-educators, the boundary between home and school dissolves. Learning becomes a community effort, and every child benefits from a wider circle of support.
This is the promise of our LIFE Model in action-a model that recognizes parents not as passive stakeholders, but as essential co-architects of their children's future.
Looking Ahead: Deepening the Partnership
Our journey is far from over. As more parents step into the role of co-educators, we are exploring new ways to deepen this partnership through:
- Parent-led workshops -empowering parents to share their skills with other families
- Community learning projects-bringing together parents, students, and teachers
- Ongoing peer support groups-maintaining the community of shared learning
Because at Light Academy, we know that the strongest classrooms are the ones where home and school no longer stand apart-they stand together.
